…According to Genesis 1:24-31 Adam was created during the last part of the sixth creative day period of 7,000 years. Almost all independent chronologists assume incorrectly that, as soon as Adam was created, then began Jehovah’s seventh seven-thousand-year period of the creative week. Such then figure that from Adam’s creation, now thought to be the fall of 4025 B.C., why, six thousand years of God’s rest day would be ending in the fall of 1976. However, from our present chronology (which is admitted imperfect) at best the fall of the year 1976 would be the end of 6,000 years of human history for mankind, 6,000 years of man’s existence on the earth, not 6,000 years of Jehovah’s seventh seven-thousand-year period. Why not? Because Adam lived some time after his creation in the latter part of Jehovah’s sixth creative period, before the seventh period, Jehovah’s sabbath, began. Why, it must have taken Adam quite some time to name all the animals, as he was commissioned to do. Further, it appears from the New World Bible Translation that, even while Adam was naming the animals, other family kinds of living creatures were being created for Adam to designate by name. It was not until after Adam completed this assignment of work that his helpmate Eve was created…. The very fact that, as part of Jehovah’s secret, no one today is able to find out how much time Adam and later Eve lived during the closing days of the sixth creative period, so no one can now determine when six thousand years of Jehovah’s present rest day comes to an end.

Those who look to the Bible in hope of finding encouraging facts about the future should not be surprised to find critical times included in its forecast for the twentieth century. Wars, food shortages, earthquakes, increase in crime and a collapse in morals are all prophesied for this generation. But then it also speaks of a group of people preaching about the righteous kingdom of God, a war of God against all wickedness, followed by a paradise earth without death-all to be realized in the twentieth century.” (par 18) Jehovah’s witnesses, numbering 851,000 in 179 different lands, are doing this preaching about God’s kingdom. That now-operating kingdom in heaven will, within the twentieth century, cleanse the entire earth of wickedness. (par 21) What day was Jesus speaking of? The beginning of World War III? No, Zephaniah 2:3 identifies it as “the day of Jehovah’s anger.” Revelation 16:16 calls it the “war of the great day of God the Almighty,” Armageddon. This war will come in the twentieth century. It will come right on schedule, as have the wars, food shortages, earthquakes and other events foretold. This generation will see its fulfillment.

Since the seventh creative day has proved to be thousands of years in length, nearly 6,000 years having elapsed since Adam’s creation, and since Bible prophecy proves that we are living in the time of the end of this wicked system of things immediately preceding the restful 1,000-year Kingdom reign of Christ, it is reasonable to conclude that this great rest day would be complete with 7,000 years. The 1,000-year reign of Christ would logically be included in this 7,000-year rest day of God. This means the seventh creative day is in itself a week of 1,000-year days. Because Jehovah’s name will be vindicated during this time and his purposes for the earth and for man completely fulfilled, the day is sacred. His blessing of it will be manifested in the 1,000-year reign of the Messiah… The world to come is the 1,000-year reign of the Messiah, a fitting climax to the symbolic week of 7,000 years that make up man’s existence on earth during God’s rest day. It will bring to mankind rest from slaving toil and from the bondage of sin… As the apostle Paul pointed out, the sabbath was a shadow of things to come. It pointed to the 1,000-year reign of Christ, which will bring to obedient mankind God’s promised blessing of eternal life and peace in a restful new world.

We arrive at 4026 B.C.E. for the creation of Adam, perhaps in the fall, since it is in the fall that the year began on the most ancient calendars. Of what significance is this today? It means that by the fall of 1963 mankind has dwelt upon this earth 5,988 years. Does this mean, then, that by 1963 we had progressed 5,988 years into the “day” on which Jehovah “has been resting from all his work”? No, for the creation of Adam does not correspond with the beginning of Jehovah’s rest day. Following Adam’s creation, and still within the sixth creative day, Jehovah appears to have been forming further animal and bird creations. Also, he had Adam name the animals, which would take some time, and he proceeded to create Eve. Whatever time elapsed between Adam’s creation and the end of the “sixth day” must be subtracted from the 5,988 years in order to give the actual length of time from the beginning of the “seventh day” until now. It does no good to use Bible chronology for speculating on dates that are still future in the stream of time.

Chart of Dates starting with 4026 B.C.E. – “When we think of all the things that the marvelous Revelation discloses, which the King of kings and Lord of lords will bring to pass at his coming, are we not also, like John, eager for his coming? Are we not glad that it will be quickly? Do we not love it so much that we yearn for it to be quickly accomplished? Most sincerely, Yes! And most heartily we, who are now nineteen hundred years nearer to his promised coming, can join the aged apostle John in prayerfully saying:. “Amen! Come, Lord Jesus,” So, in harmony with this request, we will lovingly do the things that the Revelation which he transmitted to John for us say that we must do until he comes. How favoredthose doing so are today! What an expression of his undeserved kindness it has been for Jesus to make understandable to us so much of this glorious revelation from Jehovah God! Provided that we continue to serve and obey the Lord Jesus as we await his longed-for coming, his undeserved kindness will remain with us.

1965-01-01 Things in Which It Is Impossible for God to Lie, pp 296-97

Since the end of the sixth creative day Jehovah God has been enjoying his great sabbath day, desisting from work of earthly creation. Christ’s disciples enter into God’s sabbath keeping by desisting from their own works at trying to justify themselves. Instead, they rest their faith in the righteousness and sacrifice of the Son of God… So, there remains a sabbath resting for the people of God. For the man that has entered into God’s rest has also himself rested from his own works, just as God did from his own [in 4026 B.C.E.].“Let us therefore do our utmost to enter into that rest, for fear anyone should fall in the same pattern of disobedience.” So, now, back to our original question, Must you keep a weekly sabbath day? The Holy Bible answers No! Instead, the thing to do is to enter into “God’s rest” by exercising faith in his lifesaving provisions through his Son Jesus Christ. The account in Genesis 2:1-3 does not say that God took up working creatively again with regard to our earth after the 6th creative day had ended with the creation of Adam and Eve. God has been enjoying a great rest day ever since. He invites us to enter into it with him by resting each one “from his own works” at self-justification and by believing God’s Word and putting faith in his provision for salvation through Jesus Christ. So let us keep God’s rest every day.

1966-06-25 Life Everlasting (book) pp 26-30 – (par 39)

The time is fast drawing near for the reality that was foreshadowed by the Jubilee of liberty to be proclaimed throughout the earth to all mankind now oppressed by many enslaving things. In view of the earth-wide situation and the world’s condition, it appears most urgent for the liberation like that of the Jubilee to come soon. Most certainly the near future would be the most appropriate time for it. God’s own written Word indicates that it is the appointed time for it. Here we are well along in the twentieth century of our Common Era.” (p29, par 41) The published timetable resulting from this independent study gives the date of man’s creation as 4026 B.C.E. According to this trustworthy Bible chronology six thousand years from man’s creation will end in 1975, and the seventh period of a thousand years of human history will begin in the fall of 1975 C.E. (p 29, par 42) “So six thousand years of man’s existence on earth will soon be up, yes, within this generation… So in not many years within our own generation we are reaching what Jehovah God could view as the seventh day of man’s existence. (p 30, par 43) “HOW appropriate it would be for Jehovah God to make of this coming seventh period of a thousand years a sabbath period of rest and release, a great Jubilee sabbath for the proclaiming of liberty throughout the earth to all its inhabitants! This would be most timely for mankind. It would also be most fitting on God’s part, for, remember, mankind has yet ahead of it what the last book of the Holy Bible speaks of as the reign of Jesus Christ over earth for a thousand years, the millennial reign of Christ… It would not be by mere chance or accident but would be according to the loving purpose of Jehovah God for the reign of Jesus Christ, the “Lord of the sabbath,” to run parallel with the seventh millennium of man’s existence… Shortly, within our own generation, the symbolical trumpet will be sounded by divine power, proclaiming “liberty in the land to all its inhabitants… The long awaited time for this is at hand!”

This would mean that the remnant of these “slaves of our God” would be sealed in their foreheads as God’s special property toward the end of six thousand years of humankind’s existence. We are near that point of time now! Bible time-scheduling indicates it. A world storm must therefore be shortly ahead.

The Scriptures tend to show that a remnant of the Bride class will live for a time here on earth after the end of this system of things and the abyssing of Satan and the other demons. For example, Noah’s wife, who pictured the anointed remnant, survived the Flood. Also, as Elisha lived through the destructive work of Jehu of old, so too some of the anointed Elisha class of today will evidently survive the destructive activity of the Greater Jehu, Jesus Christ. These Biblical pictures indicate that some members of the Bride of Christ will live for a time here on earth during the early part of Christ’s thousand-year reign. Consequently, the feast or evening meal of the Lamb’s marriage will remain in progress until the very last member of the Bride class dies in faithfulness and is united with Jesus Christ in heaven. How long the marriage feast will continue in heaven after the binding and abyssing of Satan and his wicked angels is unknown to the Bridal remnant today.

All of us who attended one of the “God’s Sons of Liberty” District Assemblies this past summer were given much to think about, weren’t we? The talks and the dramas made us feel the urgency of the times… The young people, too, have a lot to think about. Where are they going to expend their energies? …The work is urgent, and here at Bethel we feel that urgency. The program emphasized the responsibility of each one to give free to others the truth that he has received free. …people everywhere desperately need something they can really believe in, and we have it for them.

1966-10-08 Aw pp 17-20 – “How Much Longer Will It Be?”

When? This Generation! – So it was to our generation that Jesus referred when he added the key thought: “This generation will by no means pass away until all these things occur.” (Matt. 24:34) The generation that saw the beginning of woes in 1914 would also see the end of Satan and his entire wicked system of things. Some who were alive then would still be alive when “the end” comes.

It is to be carefully noted that the youngest of those who saw with understanding the developing sign of the end of this system of things from its start in 1914 are now well over sixty years of age! In fact, the greater part of the adult generation that experienced the start of the “last days” has already passed away in death. The generation to which they belonged is now well along toward its complete passing away. The time left, then, is definitely limited, and it is very short. Note, too, that Jesus pointedly said “this generation will by no means pass away until all these things occur.” So we should not look for the passing away of all members of that generation. The end of this wicked system of things will come before all members could pass away.

”Times of the Nations” – Bible chronology also verifies that the “last days” began in 1914. One prophecy based on chronology has to do with what Jesus mentioned when he stated that “Jerusalem will be trampled on by the nations, until the appointed times of the nations are fulfilled.” (Luke 21:24) What Jesus referred to was a definite period of time when God would have no representative government in the earth. The last such was ancient Israel, with its capital in Jerusalem.

In the year 607 B.C.E. Jerusalem was trampled on by the Babylonians. Daniel 4:16 notes that “seven times” would pass. At the end of those “times” God would set up his heavenly government, his Kingdom, under Christ “in the midst of [his] enemies.”-Ps. 110:2. Those “seven times,” according to the Bible’s timetable, would be a period of 2,520 years, beginning its count from 607 B.C.E. This reckoning of time brings us to the year 1914. And that is no accident! It harmonizes completely with the visible sign Jesus gave, which we- have seen fulfilled since 1914.

There is another chronological indication that we are rapidly nearing the closing time for this wicked system of things. It is the fact that shortly, according to reliable Bible chronology, 6,000 years of human history will come to an end.

The Bible shows that when God began to shape the earth for human habitation, he worked for six “days,” or time periods. From the indications in God’s Word, each was apparently 7,000 years in length. Then, Genesis 2:2 states, Jehovah “proceeded to rest on the seventh day from all his work that he had made.” This seventh day, God’s rest day, has progressed nearly 6,000 years, and there is still the 1,000-year reign of Christ to go before its end… This seventh l,000-year period of human existence could well be likened to a great sabbath day, pictured by the sabbath day God commanded ancient Israel to keep after working for six days. After six thousand years of toil and bondage to sin, sickness, death and Satan, mankind is due to enjoy a rest and is in dire need of a rest. Hence, the fact that we are nearing the end of the first 6,000 years of man’s existence is of great significance.

Does God’s rest day parallel the time man has been on earth since his creation? Apparently so. From the most reliable investigations of Bible chronology, harmonizing with many accepted dates of secular history, we find that Adam was created in the autumn of the year 4026 B.C.E. Sometime in that same year Eve could well have been created, directly after which God’s rest day commenced. In what year, then, would the first 6,000 years of man’s existence and also the first 6,000 years of God’s rest day come to an end? The year 1975. This is worthy of notice, particularly in view of the fact that the “last days” began in 1914, and that the physical facts of our day in fulfillment of prophecy mark this as the last generation, of this wicked world. So we can expect the immediate future to be filled with thrilling events for those who rest their faith in God and his promises. It means that within relatively few years we will witness the fulfillment of the remaining prophecies that have to do with the “time of the end.”

Of course, as to the precise day and hour of the end, Jesus noted that knowledge of this was in the province of his heavenly Father alone. (Matt 24:36) But when a brief period of years at the most separates us from the great windup of this old system, the vital thing is to stay spiritually awake.

So how much longer will it be? The answer is: ‘Not long, for the end of wickedness is near.’ Not much longer will Jehovah God tolerate the wicked system of things that has continually reproached his name and often blamed him for its failures. Not much longer will he permit false religious systems and godless politicians to deceive the people and run things to suit their selfish inclinations. Not much longer will the Almighty permit Satan and his demons to stay active at the earth.

At all assembly points where it was released, the book was received enthusiastically. Crowds gathered around stands and soon supplies of the book were depleted. Immediately its contents were examined. It did not take the brothers very long to find the chart beginning on page 31, showing that 6,000 years of man’s existence end in 1975. Discussion of 1975 overshadowed about everything else. “The new book compels us to realize that Armageddon is, in fact, very close indeed,” said a conventioner. Surely it was one of the outstanding blessings to be carried home! …‘What about the year 1975? What is it going to mean, dear friends?’ asked Brother Franz. ‘Does it mean that Armageddon is going to be finished, with Satan bound, by 1975? It could! It could! All things are possible with God. Does it mean that Babylon the Great is going to go down by 1975? It could. Does it mean that the attack of Gog of Magog is going to be made on Jehovah’s witnesses to wipe them out, then Gog himself will be put out of action? It could. But we are not saying. All things are possible with God. But we are not saying. And don’t any of you be specific in saying anything that is going to happen between now and 1975. But the big point of it all is this, dear friends: Time is short. Time is running out, no question about that… So we know that as we come to 1975 our deliverance is that much nearer.’ …“Let us make the most of the time and get in all the good hard work to Jehovah while the opportunity affords,” he urged.

One of the instructors alluded to the year 1975, the conclusion, chronologically speaking, of six thousand years of human history. His question was: What will you be found doing when that time arrives? How satisfying it would be to have volunteered for Gilead training in the spirit of Isaiah and to be then busied about taking the good news of the Kingdom to far-off nations and peoples!

We must warn them of the eternal destruction that is speeding toward them. This generation of mankind has witnessed the pouring out of God’s spirit upon all sorts of flesh in order to accomplish the great preaching work concerning God’s Messianic kingdom. Now, shortly, must come the fulfillment of the rest of Joel’s prophecy (2:28-32), and that is the “great and fear inspiring day of Jehovah” for the destruction of all those who do not call upon the name of Jehovah through Jesus Christ and who do not seek refuge with Jehovah’s anointed remnant under protection of the “heavenly Jerusalem.”

Get a solid foundation of Bible knowledge, a clear picture of what is required of a Christian, and then do not hesitate to act in harmony with what you learn. But do not delay! We should not waste vital time listening to the political promises or looking to this or to that political party to stave off or avoid Armageddon. The warning concerning this battle has been going out for many years and the day is fast approaching. As long ago as 1897 the publishing agent of Jehovah’s witnesses, the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society, published the book called “The Battle of Armageddon” …There is a place of safety in which one can be preserved, in effect, hidden, at the great battle of Armageddon. This is by placing oneself under the protection of Jehovah’s kingdom now established under his Son Jesus Christ. It means that those who will receive protection will be neutral as to this world’s politics, having no share in it. They will be active in proclaiming the established kingdom of God by Jesus Christ. One doing this is in a favored position… It will require courage to take such a position and maintain it because of the opposition of the Dragon, the “wild beast” and the “false prophet” and the inspired expressions that come forth like unclean frogs from their mouths. But those who diligently study God’s Word, trust in him and maintain faithful integrity, will have help, they can endure, to be hidden, covered over, or preserved during that time. They will enjoy the fine privilege of seeing Satan’s complete organization on earth and all wickedness destroyed off of it and the dawning of a righteous new day in which a new world order under the peaceful kingdom of Christ will be ushered in to rule everlastingly.

But, without a doubt, nothing has created more interest in this textbook (Life Everlasting—in Freedom of the Sons of God) than the first chapter with its chart and fine information regarding the 7,000 years of God’s rest day. The observation that 1975 may well mark the beginning of mankind’s great Jubilee has intrigued many.

It was truly exciting to peruse the chart at the end of chapter 1 on ‘Significant Dates from Man’s Creation to 7000 A.M.’ and yet how carefully the book worded matters: ‘How appropriate it would be for Jehovah God to make of this coming seventh period of a thousand years a sabbath of rest and release.’ Undoubtedly ‘this would be most timely for mankind,’ and judging by the fulfillment of such prophecies as that found in Matthew 24, we cannot escape it: Whether 1975 sees the beginning of the thousand-year reign of Christ or not, ‘the long-awaited time for this is at hand.’ Yes, this book has helped us to appreciate that, more than ever before, Christianity is an urgent religion!

Among them were dedicated schoolchildren, energetic brothers and sisters recently out of school, married sisters with children, husbands with families to care for and older brothers and sisters serving faithfully in their later years. What motivated them to vacation pioneer? Many of them had in mind Jesus’ electrifying words: ‘This generation will by no means pass away until all these things occur.’ Our generation is seeing the sign marking Jesus’ second presence. Truly, ‘the time left is reduced.’ For this reason many of your brothers, young and old, appreciated the importance of serving God in the time remaining… they demonstrated their appreciation of the shortness of the time remaining by vacation pioneering.” (par 4) “…thousands of brothers, probably including some in your own congregation, have exerted themselves to vacation pioneer in the short time before the end of this system of things.” (par 7) “If you are able to vacation pioneer, it will give you greater satisfaction in knowing that you have not held back in telling others the good news.” (par 8) “…and this matter of serving in the remaining time is becoming increasingly urgent. Many brothers were thrilled to read the information in the book Life Everlasting—in Freedom of the Songs of God. A review of Bible chronology along with the physical facts of history in fulfillment of prophecy helped them to appreciate that the time remaining before the end of this wicked system of things is very short. As a result, throughout the earth mature servants of Jehovah are applying themselves with increased diligence to the Kingdom preaching work that Jesus said would be done before “the end will come.” (par 9) “…in early April there will be the special talk ‘Mankind’s Millennium Under God’s Kingdom—Why Literally So.’” (par 10) “We hope that will be your blessed privilege as you faithfully serve God in the time remaining.

Rather than being content with “sustenance and covering,” those who devote themselves to getting a “higher education” usually want to be able to enjoy “the rest of the things” that money can buy…It may even come as a shock to their parents. Why, just recently a man who wanted his boy to have a “good education” so that life would be easier for him found that, in just one year at college, the boy had lost his faith—something that no amount of money can buy… Many are the individuals who, even in their quest for what might be considered just the normal requirements of life, allow their production of fruitage to God’s praise to be stifled. They associate with Jehovah’s people, but they are not really “rich toward God.” Overtime secular work frequently crowds out attendance at the congregation meetings, because fear of displeasing their employer is stronger than their fear of displeasing God. They may have a token share in the field ministry because they know it is a Christian requirement, but their principal efforts are channeled into other interests. What will be their position when Armageddon strikes? Will Jehovah, who examines the heart, really find that they are persons who have loved him with all their heart and mind and soul and strength?

Grand privileges of service open up for willing servants. What a fine privilege to be serving in such a place during the remaining years of this old system of things!

1967-03-01 WT pp 158-159 – “Let the People Hear Through Preaching”

How important it is to let the people hear through our preaching! With Armageddon drawing on apace, more than ever before it is true that only those who ‘call on the name of Jehovah will be saved.’ …Because someone else preached, you have been able to get on the road to salvation by calling on the name of Jehovah. Are you now doing all you can so that others may do the same? …Let us ever bear in mind as we let the people hear through our preaching that if the people believe the good news, not only will it be a means of their eventually gaining everlasting life, but, even now, by accepting the truth they will gain many blessings; they will find themselves living in a better moral climate, will know greater happiness and contentment, and will find that their relations with others are improving. …So let us be diligent to let as many people as possible hear through our preaching in the few short remaining years before Armageddon, and to do so in imitation of the apostle Paul!

1967-04-01 WT p 197 – “How We Know We Live In The Last Days?”

As the last day of a week has a definite beginning and a definite end, so the “last days” of this entire system of things have a definite beginning and a definite end. During that limited span of time world events are to build rapidly toward a climax. That climax will come when God himself brings to an end this wicked system and replaces it with one that is good… Jesus enumerated many of the momentous events that would take place. These events would come together within one generation to identify the “last days” clearly. They would be like the different lines that make up a person’s fingerprint, a print that cannot belong to any other person. The “last days” contain their own unique grouping of marks, or events, forming a positive “fingerprint” that cannot belong to any other time period… When the many factors are put together, we find that our generation, our day is the one that is identified in the Bible as the “last days.” **In fact, in this year 1967 we are actually living in the final part of that time! This can be compared to, not just the last day of a week, but, rather, the last part of that last day… There is no escaping it. All the lines of the “fingerprint” are there to show conclusively that we have been in the “last days” since 1914, over fifty-two years now! …Hence, do not be deceived by this world’s propaganda that promises a bright tomorrow for this system. God promises its end. Whom are you going to believe? For your everlasting happiness listen, learn and then do what God requires of you…

1967-04-01 District Convention – Charles Sinutko talk – Serving with Everlasting Life in View

…some of us looking forward to a change in this old system and its destruction for many years now, there are some of us who get a little weary. now, as Jehovah’s Witnesses, as runners, even though some of us have become a little weary, it almost seems as though Jehovah has provided meat in due season. Because he’s held up before all of us, a new goal. A new year. Something to reach out for and it just seems it has given all of us so much more energy and power in this final burst of speed to the finish line. And that’s the year 1975… There’s been a lot of talk about the year, in fact even this week some individuals have been wondering, ‘well, what does it mean? Do we dare talk about it? Is it something we can discuss among ourselves, even though we may not talk much about it in public? Do we really know what it means?’ Well, we don’t have to guess what the year 1975 means if we read the Watchtower. Because the Watchtower has been very explicit as to what the year 1975 means to us. If you wish to write down the page, 262, in the [May 1] 1967 issue of the Watchtower, we read: What does the year 1975 mean for humankind? The end of 6000 years of human existence, and possibly, the time when God executes the wicked and starts off a thousand-year reign under his son Jesus Christ. Doesn’t that give you a little bit of excitement about the future? Even if there is the possibility, that’s it, when God will bring the battle of Armageddon, and clean this old Earth off? There are the skeptics who say ‘well, I’m not going to think about it and not worry about it. I’m not going to pay attention to it.’ Well now remember brothers, the faithful and discreet slave is used by Jesus to to what? Jesus says ‘to provide meat in due season.’ This is meat, and it’s come at the right time. And it’s in its due season. And it’s not wrong to think about it, and to look forward to it… How little time there is left. How much to happen… And all of that, possibly, has to happen and be finished within the year 1975… Exciting years ahead of us! And then look beyond that: the 1000 year reign of Jesus Christ. Know what that means? All the dead being brought back. Just think of the dear ones you’ve lost, maybe in the last five or ten years. Don’t you look forward to seeing them coming back? Well it won’t be long now. Look at what’s ahead… We’re going to listen to their agonizing entreaty “Brothers get in” because they know what’s coming! And it’s coming fast. And don’t wait ’till 1975. The door is going to be shut before then… The goal is there: everlasting life! Serve with it in view! Do what Jesus Christ says: serve with everlasting view, as long as Jehovah asks us! Jesus urged “Endurance on your part” and then he says “by enduring, you will acquire your souls.” As one brother put it, “Stay alive to Seventy-Five”

1967-04-15 WT pp 229-237 – “Mankind’s Millennium under God’s Kingdom – Why Literally So?”

(par 25) According to a more recent calculation of the Bible timetable, six thousand years of man’s existence will end in the latter half of the year 1975, which is well within this century. The Bible millennium is ahead of us, and, according to the count of time and the events of world history, it is approaching. It is not ending, as Roman Catholic comments on the Bible would make us believe… (par 29) The Apocalypse or book of Revelation unmistakably lines up the battle of Armageddon as taking place before Satan is bound and cast into the bottomless pit or abyss. The Bible account describes Satan the Devil as having a direct part in gathering the nations to that battlefield, saying that out of the mouth of the Dragon Satan the Devil an unclean spirit comes forth and joins the unclean spirits out of the mouths of the beast and the false prophet in going to the kings of the whole earth and gathering them to the battle of the great day of God the Almighty, which is to be fought at Armageddon. Now is when those three spirits of devils from those three sources are going to the earthly rulers. Now is when those rulers and their armies are on the march to Armageddon, as we have so frequently been warned by prominent men. Logically, then, the Dragon Satan the Devil could not now be bound and be in the bottomless pit unable to seduce the nations any more, if the unclean spirit out of his mouth is joining in the gathering of the earthly rulers and their armies to Armageddon… So, then, just as the battle of Armageddon is yet future, the binding and casting of Satan into the bottomless pit is future, for these acts follow the battle of Armageddon. In view of that, the thousand-year reign of Christ must yet be future, for it follows the casting of Satan into the bottomless pit and continues during the thousand years that Satan is imprisoned in that bottomless pit or abyss. Thus again the anti-millenarian teachings of Augustine and other religious leaders of Christendom are proved to be false. We must yet have a real millennial reign of Christ. The grand fact is that it is very near, for our relief.

1967-04-15 WT p 244 – “The Most Urgent Warning Ever Given”

NO MATTER how well you like what you are doing, no matter how satisfied you are with your situation and no matter what your plans are, you will immediately leave all these and run to a place of safety if you are convinced that the danger of sudden death is staring you in the face. Of course, the warning of such a thing, to be strong enough to motivate you to flight, would have to be from a reliable source and attended by other circumstances that would convince you that the warning was a true one. That is exactly the case with the warning that we speak of here, and there are reasons why it can truly be said to be the most urgent warning ever given. First, it is from God… There is no means of escape aside from the one God provides… the peril of which it warns is so very near! Bible chronology and prophecy with the events piling up that demonstrate its nearness show that the warning must be given with the greatest urgency and acted on with all possible speed. It is to come within the generation that has already seen two world wars and it is only a few short years ahead of us…

1967-05-01 WT pp 259-62 – “Where Are We According to Jehovah’s Timetable?”

FROM reading God’s Word the Bible one cannot but conclude that God knows what the future holds. For the frightful events of our time were all foretold by him centuries ago and are appearing on the world scene precisely on schedule according to his “timetable.” Therefore, knowledge of this “timetable” is of intense interest to man, for it provides him with priceless information that marks his location in the stream of time. It also reveals what events are about to break forth on the world scene. So with this information close at hand we can chart a course in life that will lead to a happy conclusion. For example, the Bible “timetable” indicates that we are at the threshold of a new era, that this earth is in store for a number of dramatic changes in this very generation—changes that will affect your life and that of every other person for all time to come. It shows we are facing the day for the expression of God’s wrath against all wickedness in the battle at what the Bible calls “Armageddon.” Following that war will be the glorious thousand-year reign of Jesus Christ… But how can we be confident that these promises are sure of fulfillment? The answer is simple: Because these are the promises of a God who cannot lie. They are scheduled events in the “timetable” of God.” …For instance, in the book of Ecclesiastes (3:1, 8) the Creator assures us: “For everything there is an appointed time, even a time for every affair under the heavens: . . . a time for war and a time for peace.” Without doubt, then, there is a precise time for the war of Armageddon to be fought and also a set time for the peaceful thousand-year reign of Christ to begin… A close study of the Bible helps us to appreciate that world events can be anticipated and understood in advance by those who are acquainted with Bible prophecies… Ours is a most critical generation. Bible chronology and prophecies agree on this fact. We who live today stand at the threshold of Armageddon, God’s war in which the wicked will be wiped off the earth… These events emphasize the preciseness of God’s “timetable.” They make us witnesses of fulfilled prophecies. They tell us what Satan the Devil already knows, namely, that we stand at the threshold of Armageddon, that his wicked rule is about to end, that ‘God’s kingdom come’ will soon be a reality for the earth… In examining these Scriptural facts, something else also captures our attention. According to Bible chronology, we are already over fifty-two years into the wicked system of things’ “time of the end.” That time began in the autumn of 1914 C.E., at the termination of the “appointed times of the nations,” and it is already far advanced. Jesus said that “this generation” that saw the beginning of this time period in 1914 would also see its end. The generation that was old enough to view those events with understanding in 1914 is no longer young. It no longer has many years to run. Already many of its members have died. But Jesus showed that there would still be members of “this generation” alive at the time of the passing away of this wicked system of things in both heaven and earth. How much longer will it be, then, before God takes action to destroy the wicked and usher in the blessings of his Kingdom rule? Interestingly, the autumn of the year 1975 marks the end of 6,000 years of human experience. This is ascertainable from reliable chronology preserved in the Bible itself. What will that year mean for humankind? Will it be the time when God executes the wicked and starts off the thousand-year reign of his Son Jesus Christ? It very well could, but we will have to wait to see. Yet of this we can be certain: the generation that Jesus said would witness those events is nearing its close. The time is close at hand. On God’s “timetable” we are in the closing days of a wicked system of things that will soon be gone forever. A glorious new order is immediately before us. This is, therefore, good reason for Christians everywhere to rejoice. Yes, they rejoice because fulfillment of their prayers for the kingdom of God is now at hand… The prophecy is sure; the time is short.

…what should be our attitude toward meeting together in the days ahead as the end of the old system draws near and the outside pressures increase?”

1967-07-15 WT pp 444-447

In our previous issue we discussed the war of Har-Magedon (Armageddon), which takes place after false religion has been wiped out by the political rulers and which war, in turn, wipes out all politics on earth and those who stubbornly hang on… According to the Bible timetable, man’s history on earth has been nearly 6,000 years. Adam was created in 4026 B.C.E., which means that six thousand years of human history end about the fall of 1975 C.E. We are in the great 7,000-year rest day of God, starting at the time he rested after the creation of Adam and Eve. There are, therefore, a thousand years left to run. Without Satan and his demons to disturb mankind it will indeed be a restful time. It will be like a sabbath. In a way it will be a sabbath within a sabbath. The last thousand years of God’s great seven thousand-year rest is a special sabbath over which the Son of man will be Lord.

It is a real pleasure to have a part in the finest work done on earth today, the work Jehovah is asking us to do in these “last days,” isn’t it? All of us appreciate that there is little time left for this present system of things. In the remaining time it is our desire to share in the preaching work as fully as possible so as to help many more honest-hearted persons to escape from Babylon the Great… (par 8) “…By zealous service we can show that we really appreciate what a privilege it is to share in this, the finest work on earth.

God the Almighty has taken his power and begun ruling as King, and the time is here for him to reward his slaves the prophets and the holy ones and those bearing his name and to bring to ruin those ruining the earth. Jehovah’s “coming” for execution of judgment upon his foes is very quick in the sense that it is only a few short years ahead, and it will seem exceedingly short to those who are caught wandering off the way of righteousness as in the dark, as if they were asleep.”

…the remaining time is short, and, as Jesus put it, ‘the good news has to be preached first,’ before the old system comes to its end.”

1967-12-15 WT p 751

(par 28) …the expression “this generation” was used by Jesus to mark a very limited period of time, the life-span of members of a generation of people living during the time that certain epoch making events occurred. According to Psalm 90:10, that life-span could be of seventy years or even of eighty years. (par 29) Into this comparatively short period of time must be crowded all the things that Jesus prophesied in answer to the request for a “sign when all these things are destined to come to a conclusion.” (Mark 13:4) Because of its being a part of the “sign,” the preaching of the “ good news” first in all the nations must be a special preaching that is carried on to a finish during the lifetime of “ this generation.” It must, therefore, be an urgent work, which fact is one reason why it must be done “first.”

Dean Acheson quote about 1975 being too dangerous to live

1968-01-15 WT pp 41-43 – “The Time is Short”

People living throughout the earth today might well ponder the lesson of such a situation. Survivors often come forth from the shelters to scenes of appalling desolation, but at least they are alive! The victims are usually those who failed to heed the warning. What if it should at times turn out to be a false alarm? Would it not be far wiser to take precautions and protect one’s life? When all the signs point unmistakably to the approach of the tornado, how foolish to ignore warnings! …But how far into the future? Not far, for all the evidences around us point to this time in which we live as the “last days” spoken about by so many of God’s inspired penmen. Further stressing the shortness of the time remaining, Jesus prophesied about a generation that would witness the fulfillment of the many-featured “sign” marking the conclusion of this system of things… Proof, all this, that the “generation” spoken of by Jesus is now close to passing away! The time is truly short! WHERE DO YOU STAND? In view of all this, where do you stand? Have you lived your life thus far with thought only for your own ambitions and pleasures? Has your time, your attention, been absorbed in the pursuit of ‘all those things that the nations are eagerly pursuing’? (Matt. 6:32) Of what lasting value are all these things when all the things in the world, yes, and the world of unbelieving mankind itself, are to pass away within the lifetime of the generation that saw World War I? …The vital question is: In view of the shortness of the time before irretrievable calamity befalls this wicked system of things on earth, what is your position in relation to the great God who can grant life or take it away? …your own family, your relatives and friends. They need to be impressed with the danger in which they stand in view of the oncoming tempest of Jehovah’s wrath upon the nations. There may yet be time for you to aid them. This is no time for complacency. It is not the time to hesitate between two opinions. It is God you must please, not men, in order to gain eternal life and happiness. You may not safely procrastinate.

1968-03-00 KM pp 3-6 – “An Opportunity to Increase Your Happiness”

From time to time, Jehovah through his organization encourages us to do something that will increase our happiness… He also knows that the most rewarding work in which we can engage now is that of “fishing” for men by preaching the good news. Naturally, the more we engage in this activity the happier we will become. How thankful we are that Jehovah offers us the opportunity to vacation pioneer, yes, an opportunity to increase our happiness! Brothers, we do not want you to feel that vacation pioneering is something everyone is obligated to do… It is something we can take up whenever we want, and the increased blessings are ours for doing so. Imagine that a person found a room full of treasures and in the room was a door marked “More Treasures.” Wouldn’t he walk through that door? Of course he would. So it is with us. …Yes, we have every incentive to take advantage of this happifying arrangement. Since we have dedicated ourselves to Jehovah, we want to do his will to the fullest extent possible. Making some special effort to do more than the usual helps us live up to our dedication. In view of the short period of time left, we want to do this as often as circumstances permit. Just think, brothers, there are only about ninety months left before 6,000 years of man’s existence on earth is completed. Do you remember what we learned at the assemblies last summer? The majority of people living today will probably be alive when Armageddon breaks out, and there are no resurrection hopes for those who are destroyed then. So, now more than ever, it is vital not to ignore that spirit of wanting to do more. Brothers, why not increase your happiness by vacation pioneering? Yes, see for yourself how God will ’cause you to rejoice with great joy.’ (signed) Your brothers seeking your increased happiness, WTB&TS of NY inc

1968-04-15 WT pp 227-230 – “What the Future Holds for You”

In their new book, Famine—1975!, two noted food experts, William and Paul Paddock, make this forecast for the future, on page 61: “By 1975 civil disorder, anarchy, military dictatorships, runaway inflation, transportation breakdowns and chaotic unrest will be the order of the day in many of the hungry nations—all because hunger will turn inexorably into starvation and starvation will become widespread famine.” …Thus, the fulfillment of Jesus’ prophecy, currently being experienced, indicates that the complete end of this system of things is at hand! …Whether men choose to recognize the fact or not, this system soon faces a similar destruction. It will occur at what the Bible calls “the war of the great day of God the Almighty,” or Armageddon. …The future, therefore, is clear-cut. Faced with Armageddon, people today are going in either one of two directions. They are either supporting this system of things and stubbornly refusing to learn about Jehovah God or they are showing that they truly love Him by taking up His service in imitation of Jesus. There are just the two courses—one leads to everlasting life and the other to eternal destruction… Which course of action are you taking? Do you put Jehovah God and his interests first, or do you selfishly pursue the pleasures and comforts of the world, making them your chief concern? Do not try to deceive yourself. You cannot be on both sides… If you truly desire to enjoy this grand future, if you desire to survive the imminent end of this system of things, then without delay seek to win the favor of Jehovah God. Since destruction will befall all “who do not know God and those who do not obey the good news about our Lord Jesus,” do not hesitate to begin a regular Bible study in your home to become better acquainted with these purposes of God.

1968-05-01 WT p 271 – “THE SEVENTH DAY”

According to reliable Bible chronology Adam was created in the year 4026 B.C.E., likely in the autumn of the year, at the end of the sixth day of creation. Then God brought the animals to man to name… Adam would realize this lonely condition very quickly, perhaps in just a few days or a few weeks. He would realize he needed another earthling with whom he could communicate, share his experiences, and his life. Nor would his naming the animals take an unduly long time. The basic animal kinds could have been relatively quickly named.. Thus, Adam’s naming of the animals and his realizing that he needed a counterpart would have occupied only a brief time after his creation. Since it was also Jehovah’s purpose for man to multiply and fill the earth, it is logical that he would create Eve soon after Adam, perhaps just a few weeks or months later in the same year, 4026 B.C.E. After her creation, God’s rest day, the seventh period, immediately followed… Eight years from the autumn of 1967 would bring us to the autumn of 1975, fully 6,000 years into God’s seventh day, his rest day… After 6,000 years of misery, toil, trouble, sickness and death under Satan’s rule, mankind is indeed in dire need of relief, a rest… The seventh day of the Jewish week, the sabbath, would well picture the final 1,000-year reign of God’s kingdom under Christ when mankind would be uplifted from 6,000 years of sin and death. (Rev. 20:6) Hence, when Christians note from God’s timetable the approaching end of 6,000 years of human history, it fills them with anticipation. Particularly is this true because the great sign of the “last days” has been in the course of fulfillment since the beginning of the “time of the end” in 1914. And, as Jesus said, “this generation will by no means pass away until all these things occur.” (Matt. 24:34) Some of the generation that discerned the beginning of the time of the end in 1914 w ill still be alive on earth to witness the end of this present wicked system of things at the battle of Armageddon… The immediate future is certain to be filled with climactic events, for this old system is nearing its complete end. Within a few years at most the final parts of Bible prophecy relative to these “last days” will undergo fulfillment, resulting in the liberation of surviving mankind into Christ’s glorious 1,000-year reign. What difficult days, but, at the same time, what grand days are just ahead! (par 8) Does this mean that the year 1975 will bring the battle of Armageddon? No one can say with certainty what any particular year will bring. Jesus said: “Concerning that day or the hour nobody knows.” (Mark 13:32) Sufficient is it for God’s servants to know for a certainty that, for this system under Satan, time is running out rapidly. How foolish a person would be not to be awake and alert to the limited time remaining, to the earthshaking events soon to take place, and to the need to work out one’s salvation! …It is especially reduced in our day, as we are near the end of 6,000 years of human history.

Where are we today on the stream of time? Do we know that the seventh year from now will conclude the 6,000th year since Adam was created? And if we live to that year 1975, what should we expect to happen? These are certainly interesting and important questions, but where can we find truthful answers to them? …(par 25) The importance of the year 607 B.C.E. in this Biblical chronology will become more apparent in the following article, as we seek an answer to the provocative question, When was Adam created?

1968-08-15 WT pp 494-501 – “Why Are You Looking Forward To 1975”

WHAT about all this talk concerning the year 1975? Lively discussions, some based on speculation, have burst into flame during recent months among serious students of the Bible. Their interest has been kindled by the belief that 1975 will mark the end of 6,000 years of human history since Adam’s creation. The nearness of such an important date indeed fires the imagination and presents unlimited possibilities for discussion. But wait! How do we know their calculations are correct? What basis is there for saying Adam was created nearly 5,993 years ago? Does the one Book that can be implicitly trusted for its truthful historical accuracy, namely, the Inspired Word of Jehovah, the Holy Bible, give support and credence to such a conclusion? (par 28) Through a careful independent study by dedicated Bible scholars who have pursued the subject for a number of years, and who have not blindly followed some traditional chronological calculations of Christendom, we have arrived at a date for Adam’s creation that is 22 years more distant in the past than Ussher’s figure. This means time is running out two decades sooner than traditional chronology anticipates. (par 29) After much of the mathematics and genealogies, really, of what benefit is this information to us today? Why should we be any more interested in the date of Adam’s creation than in the birth of King Tut? Well, for one thing… it means, in the fall of the year 1975, a little over seven years from now … it will be 6,000 years since the creation of Adam, the father of all mankind! (par 30) Are we to assume from this study that the battle of Armageddon will be all over by the autumn of 1975, and the long looked-for thousand-year reign of Christ will begin by then? Possibly, but we wait to see how closely the seventh thousand year period of man’s existence coincides with the sabbath like thousand-year reign of Christ. If these two periods run parallel with each other as to the calendar year, it will not be by mere chance or accident but will be according to Jehovah’s loving and timely purposes. Our chronology, however, which is reasonably accurate (but admittedly not infallible), at the best only points to the autumn of 1975 as the end of 6,000 years of man’s existence on earth. It does not necessarily mean that 1975 marks the end of the first 6,000 years of Jehovah’s seventh creative “day.” Why not? Because after his creation Adam lived some time during the “sixth day,” which unknown amount of time would need to be subtracted from Adam’s 930 years, to determine when the sixth seven-thousand-year period or “day” ended, and how long Adam lived into the “seventh day.” And yet the end of that sixth creative “day” could end within the same Gregorian calendar year of Adam’s creation. It may involve only a difference of weeks or months, not years.(par 32) …Eve was created after Adam. So not until after this event did the sixth creative day come to an end. Exactly how soon after Adam’s creation is not disclosed… After the sixth creative day ends, the seventh one begins. (par 33) This time between Adam’s creation and the beginning of the seventh day, the day of rest, let it be noted, need not have been a long time. It could have been a rather short one. The naming of the animals by Adam, and his discovery that there was no complement for himself, required no great length of time. The animals were in subjection to Adam; they were peaceful; they came under God’s leading; they were not needing to be chased down and caught… Eve’s creation was quickly accomplished, ‘while Adam was sleeping.’ So the lapse of time between Adam’s creation and the end of the sixth creative day, though unknown, was a comparatively short period of time. (par 34) The Watch Tower Society over the years has endeavored to keep its associates abreast with the latest scholarship that proves consistent with historic and prophetic events recorded in the Scriptures. Major problems in sacred chronology have been straightened out either due to fulfillment of Bible prophecies or by reason of archaeological discoveries or because better Bible translations convey more clearly the records of the original languages. However, several knotty problems of chronology of a minor nature are not yet resolved. For example, at the time of the exodus from Egypt when Jehovah changed the beginning of the year from autumn time on the secular calendar to spring time on the sacred calendar, was there, in the Jewish calendar, a loss or a gain of six months? (par 35) One thing is absolutely certain, Bible chronology reinforced with fulfilled Bible prophecy shows that six thousand years of man’s existence will soon be up, yes, within this generation! (Matt. 24:34) This is, therefore, no time to be indifferent and complacent. This is not the time to be toying with the words of Jesus that “concerning that day and hour nobody knows, neither the angels of the heavens nor the Son, but only the Father.” (Matt. 24:36) To the contrary, it is a time when one should be keenly aware that the end of this system of things is rapidly coming to its violent end. Make no mistake, it is sufficient that the Father himself knows both the “day and hour”! (par 37) So too with Jehovah’s faithful witnesses in this latter half of the twentieth century. They have the true Christian point of view. Their strenuous evangelistic activity is not something peculiar to this present decade. They have not dedicated their lives to serve Jehovah only until 1975.Christians have been running this way ever since Christ Jesus blazed the trail and commanded his disciples, “Follow me!” So keep this same mental attitude in you that was in Christ Jesus. Let nothing slow you down or cause you to tire and give out. Those who will flee Babylon the Great and this Satanic system of things are now running for their lives, headed for God’s kingdom, and they will not stop at 1975. O no! They will keep on in this glorious way that leads to everlasting life, praising and serving Jehovah for ever and ever!

1968-10-08 Aw pp 4-6 – “What’s This World Coming To?”

An answer to this question was noted in U.S. News & World Report of June 3, 1968, when it said: “A climax of some kind seems to be approaching the world over … It’s not the U.S. alone that’s hit. Uprisings have erupted in France, in West Germany, in Spain, in Britain, Communist Eastern Europe is affected. So is Red China.” Commenting on the fact that the problem is world wide, an editorial reprinted in the New York Times of June 10, 1968, stated: “We are at the end of the age of purely national or even regional problems. Combustibles for setting the globe afire exist everywhere.” What does the Bible show as to the meaning of all these world events? It shows that for this unrighteous world time is running out fast! It shows that within a few years at most there will take place a climax in human affairs so gigantic that it will affect every person on earth, every man, woman and child. It will, without fail, affect you. What is this climax? God himself will take a direct hand in world affairs. He will use his overwhelming power to crush wickedness and wicked people. This act of God is called “Armageddon.” This climactic act of God will bring to a sudden end all the trouble and troublemakers in the world today. It will pave the way for an entirely new system of things where people who love righteousness will find true freedom and relief from the horrifying conditions of today. Yes, this violent, crime-ridden, war torn world is coming to its end! Time is fast running out for it! It is much later for this world than you may think! Indeed, it has only a few more years of existence left!

1968-10-08 Aw pp 7-13 – “How Do We Know We Are In The Last Days?”

How can we be sure we are living in the period of time called the “last days”? Aside from chronology, what definite proof is there that this era began in the year 1914? How long a time is covered by it? When will it end? The events that Jesus, the apostle Paul and other Bible writers bring to our attention were all to take place within the same generation. These events would identify which generation’s lifetime would embrace the “last days…” It is one thing to foretell such events or conditions, it is another thing to foretell them on the scale indicated, as affecting the entire globe; to foretell that they would occur concurrently in only one generation; to foretell that they would come at the time indicated in Bible prophecy. That is why the publishers of this magazine called attention to the year 1914 as far back as 1879, pointing out that disastrous conditions would begin then. Yet, while these witnesses of Jehovah were proclaiming that 1914 would bring the worst time of trouble in history, what were others saying? …And if all this is not the fulfillment of Bible prophecy concerning the “last days,” then what does it require? What more could be expected in the way of fulfillment? For your own welfare, you should face the fact that all the many lines of the “fingerprint” for the “last days” stand out sharply, crystal clear. They allow for only one meaning: that we have been in the “last days” since 1914! Crucial questions now arise: Is there any indication in God’s timetable as to how much time there is left before this system of things comes to its end? Can we know how many more years remain for this violent system of things?

1968-10-08 Aw pp 13-16 – “What Will the 1970’s Bring? Famines and over population, danger!”

THE fact that fifty-four years of the period called the “last days” have already gone by is highly significant. It means that only a few years, at most, remain before the corrupt system of things dominating the earth is destroyed by God. How can we be so certain of this? One way is by noting what Jesus said…”Truly I say to you that this generation will by no means pass away until all these things occur.” Jesus was obviously speaking about those who were old enough to witness with understanding what took place when the “last days” began. Jesus was saying that some of those persons who were alive at the appearance of the ‘sign of the last days’ would still be alive when God brought this system to its end. Even if we presume that youngsters 15 years of age would be perceptive enough to realize the import of what happened in 1914, it would still make the youngest of “this generation” nearly 70 years old today. So the great majority of the generation to which Jesus was referring has already passed away in death. The remaining ones are approaching old age. And remember, Jesus said that the end of this wicked world would come before that generation passed away in death. This, of itself, tells us that the years left before the foretold end comes cannot be many. 6,000 Years Nearing Completion There is another way that helps confirm the fact that we are living in the final few years of this “time of the end.” The Bible shows that we are nearing the end of a full 6,000 years of human history. What significance does this have? Revelation chapter 20, verse 6, shows that God’s heavenly kingdom will rule over the earth for one thousand years after the end of this system of things. That millennium will bring a sabbathlike rest to the earth and all those then inhabiting it. Hence, the first six thousand years since man’s creation could be likened to the first six days of the week in ancient Israel. The seventh one-thousand year period could be likened to the seventh day, the sabbath, of that week. How fitting it would be for God, following this pattern, to end man’s misery after six thousand years of human rule and follow it with His glorious Kingdom rule for a thousand years! When Do 6,000 Years End?How can it be determined when 6,000 years of human history will end? According to reliable Bible chronology, Adam and Eve were created in 4026 B.C.E. …That seven-year period will evidently finish in the autumn of the year 1975… Does this mean that the above evidence positively points to 1975 as the time for the complete end of this system of things? Since the Bible does not specifically state this, no man can say. However, of this we can be sure: The 1970’s will certainly see the most critical times mankind has yet known… If the 1970’s should see intervention by Jehovah God to bring an end to a corrupt world drifting toward ultimate disintegration, that should surely not surprise us. If you feel that this is painting the picture too darkly, consider what warnings the hard facts have forced even men of this world to express. They sense that disaster is approaching, but, lacking the Bible’s guidance, they do not know what to do about it. That is why U.S. News & World Report of June 10, 1968 said: ”What is developing, as many experts see it, is an era of confusion and doubts unlike anything experienced.” (6,000 year time line graphic) One of the greatest problems, beyond man’s solving, is the coming food shortage due to the population explosion. In the book Famine-1975! food experts W. and P. Paddock state: “By 1975 a disaster of unprecedented magnitude will face the world. Famines, greater than any in history, will ravage the undeveloped nations.” “I forecast a specific date, 1975, when the new crisis will be upon us in all its awesome importance.” “By 1975 civil disorder, anarchy, military dictatorships, runaway inflation, transportation breakdowns and chaotic unrest will be the order of the day in many of the hungry nations.” And the Arizona Republic said on June 2, 1968, that Professor R Heilbroner of New York “predicted that in the early 1970’s, ‘the greatest catastrophe the world has ever known’ will occur when population far outstrips the available food supply.” Some will object and say that these distressing conditions are just a ‘passing phase’ in world affairs. ‘Things will straighten out and the present systems will gradually improve,’ they may say. But on what basis can you believe this? Have men successfully coped with these conditions, or, to the contrary, has history and your own personal experience proved that these conditions have worsened? Ask yourself: What is the trend? Are men becoming less selfish and more loving? Are they becoming less ambitious and proud? Are they tending toward greater humility, greater love for their neighbor and concern for his welfare? Is there less violence, less hatred in the world? Is it more peaceful, less dangerous? The facts answer, No! He is not solving his problems… since the majority of humans and their leaders do not really want God as their ruler, they will have to be taken out of the way. That is why Bible prophecy says of our time… Dan 2:44. Those who submit to God’s requirements will be protected by him through the coming Armageddon destruction of this system of things. After the end of this system of things, then what? A new day will dawn for the human family! Armageddon survivors will begin to enjoy all the benefits of a righteous new order. Just what will conditions be like on earth then? What blessings will flow to the human family during this 1,000-year rule of God’s kingdom?

1968-10-08 Aw pp 23-29 – “A Time To Lift Up Your Head in Confident Hope”

Still some persons may say: “How can you be sure? Maybe it is later than many people think. But maybe it is not as late as some persons claim. People have been mistaken about these prophecies before.” The Difference– True, there have been those in times past who predicted an “end to the world,” even announcing a specific date. Some have gathered groups of people with them and fled to the hills or withdrawn into their houses waiting for the end. Yet, nothing happened. The “end” did not come. They were guilty of false prophesying. Why? What was missing? Missing was the full measure of evidence required in fulfillment of Bible prophecy. Missing from such people were God’s truths and the evidence that he was guiding and using them. But what about today? Today we have the evidence required, all of it. And it is overwhelming! All the many, many parts of the great sign of the “last days” are here, together with verifying Bible chronology. (illustration about someone predicting winter) We today have all the many parts of that sign, nearly forty of them, being fulfilled within the same generation, and we have God’s timetable, his “calendar,” showing that the time has nearly run out for the present unrighteous system of things. This is very different indeed from the situation with those who proclaimed an “end to the world” in earlier generations. We need to realize that the majority of persons will not be moved by the evidence that God’s kingdom has drawn near. Why? They are not really interested in God’s new system taking over control of earth. They do not want to submit to God’s rule, preferring to pursue their own selfish desires. These people will look for ways to reject or ridicule the evidence. Many people’ today are like persons on a runaway train who pay no attention when someone sincerely tries to warn them that the train is heading for disaster.  A Parallel Situation in Jesus’ DayThose who did not believe Jesus, or at least doubted him, ignored the sign. Thinking the Romans would not be back, they resumed their routine of life. In fact, four years later, in 70 C.E. …Just at that time, the Roman armies came back in force! They quickly surrounded Jerusalem, trapping more than a million Jews inside the city. After a siege, those powerful armies of Rome broke through the city’s defenses. More than a million Jews died due to famine and disease or were slaughtered, and tens of thousands were taken captive.  No Real Excuse for Doubting Despite all the evidence surrounding them in proof that God’s kingdom will soon come against the present wicked system, some still call for added proof. They would like some obviously supernatural phenomena to take place so as to convince them that it is truly later than they had thought. If we believe God’s Word we will rejoice. Do you believe it? Or are you perhaps influenced by persons who attempt to discredit and downgrade the Bible’s reliability? If so, you should not make the mistake of thinking that such criticism has true scientific basis. So, while you may choose to doubt the Bible’s authenticity, if you have never made a thorough study of it, then you should be honest enough to admit either to ignorance of its contents or perhaps even prejudice against them. But ignorance or prejudice on such a vital subject and in a time such as we are now experiencing is dangerous indeed… We sincerely hope that you are one who will open-mindedly consider the facts, and that your faith in God’s justice and love and in the truth of his Word continues unaffected by the doubts and scoffings of a world that blindly rushes on in a disastrous course. This system of things is picking up speed in its downward plunge. Will you stay with it and take the consequences, or will you listen to the counsel of God’s Word and abandon it? The time remaining for a decision is short. The opportunity is still before you, like the open door of the ark built by Noah before the Flood, and like the open gates of Jerusalem when Rome’s armies temporarily withdrew. But that door of opportunity will soon close for all time. Prompt action is vital if you would be among the happy survivors of this present system’s destruction. What can you do and what will it require of you?

1968-10-08 Aw pp 27-29 – “What Will It Cost You?”

Like a train about to plunge into an abyss, this system of things is about to plunge into destruction. Time is fast running out for it! What will it cost you to have the hope of living through the end of this wicked system of things? What will you have to pay to gain life in God’s new order? Only God can, and will, give eternal life to deserving ones. Deserving ones? Does this mean that the gift of life will not come to everyone automatically? This is just what it means. While the gift of eternal life is available to everybody, it will be given only to those who meet the conditions God lays down… if you want to survive the end of this wicked world and be given the gift of eternal life in God’s new system, you need to do God’s will… Keeping God’s commandments, doing his will, is not a heavy, depressing burden. Instead, it is refreshing, uplifting, light… To do God’s will, you must first know what it is. To find that out, you need to spend time and effort. Is that too high a price to pay for learning about eternal life? Surely not… No Time to Lose – The end of this wicked system is approaching rapidly. It is much later than most people realize. Hence, there is no time to lose in working for survival. Do not be misled into thinking you can ignore the matter and that God will somehow favor you when the end comes. No, you cannot gain eternal life without God’s approval, and you cannot get God’s approval without meeting his conditions… Do you want to be left over in the earth when this wicked system is annihilated soon at Armageddon? You have no time to lose in making friends with God, because time is rapidly running out for this wicked system of things. It is very close to plunging into the chasm of Armageddon. Therefore, take steps quickly to work for survival and for eternal life in God’s new order.

1968-11-01 – District Overseer Duggan at Pampa Texas Assembly – “…83 months left!”

1968-12-01 WT p 715

…from the context of Mark 13:10 it is apparent that Jesus had in mind a special kind of good news. How so? In that he stated that the preaching of this good news was part of the great sign indicating his presence and the nearness of the end of this system of things. It has been in particular since 1919 that this good news has been preached. This good news tells the people that God’s kingdom has been established in the heavens, that Satan has been cast out of heaven, that God’s war of Armageddon is near, that soon the blessings of God’s kingdom will make this earth into a paradise and that then even the dead in the memorial tombs will arise… preached, Jesus indicated urgency. And so Jehovah’s witnesses must be urgent about preaching the good news, for the remaining time is reduced… How much more so should Jesus’ true followers be working extra hard, since they too know that the time left for preaching this good news of the Kingdom is getting ever shorter! It is not reasonable to expect that present favorable conditions for preaching the good news will continue indefinitely. Besides, did not Jesus say that this generation will not pass away until all things are fulfilled? A generation, according to Psalm 90:10, is from seventy to eighty years. The generation that witnessed the end of the Gentile Times in 1914 does not have many more years left.

1968-12-15 WT pp 750-756 – “How We Know its Getting Near”

Have not all these predicted things already come true in large measure, although not altogether to their fullest measure? (Nine paragraphs recounting all the military might, including airplanes, missiles, submarines, and bombs) (par 13) Well, now, what about us? What does all this mean for us? …if we are faithful, dedicated, baptized followers of the great Prophet Jesus Christ, we do not need to be bowed down with the nations in their anguish and fears… when you see these things occurring, know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly I say to you, This generation will by no means pass away until all things occur. (par 18) “These things,” as foretold by Jesus in his prophecy, we who are of “this generation” have seen occurring since the year 1914, in which year the “appointed times of the nations” ended. Sooner would heaven and earth literally pass away than for Jesus’ words to pass away unfulfilled. Therefore Jesus’ words are so worthy of our accepting and believing. (par 19) What should we do, then, to prove that we do believe this? We of “this generation” have seen these foretold things “start to occur” in 1914, and now for the last fifty-four years we have seen them occurring. So our convictions have been confirmed. From a long train of foretold events we know that the kingdom of God is getting near to its act of destroying this system of things and its supporters at Armageddon and bringing about our glorious deliverance. (par 22) We are all of us bound to enter into that day since it will arrive suddenly earth wide, no dweller on earth being out of its reach. (par 24) This active, faithful course will shortly bring us the grand reward of our being delivered from this wicked system of things into God’s blessed new order.

1969-01-15 WT p 45 – (par 21)

The day-by-day passage of time that may seem slow to men and make us impatient for a quick change in conditions is as nothing to our God who is without beginning or end. Yet the time that he has set for the accomplishment of his righteous purpose toward the earth is scheduled to run out within the coming few years of this generation. So we do not want to fall now at this late date in man’s history into Satan’s trap of unbelief and lack of faith.

1969-02-01 WT pp 68-71 – Famine-1975! quoted again!

During and after World War II widespread food shortages added to the distress. Shortly after the war, magazine in its June 11, 1946, issue observed: “A fourth of the world is starving today. Tomorrow will even be worse. Famine over most of the world now is more terrible than most of us can imagine. . . . There are now more people hunting desperately for food than at any other time in history. More recently, the book entitled “Famine— 1975!” by William and Paul Paddock said concerning today’s food shortages, on pages 52, 55 and 61: “Hunger is rampant throughout country after country, continent after continent around the undeveloped belt of the tropics and subtropics. Today’s crisis can move in only one direction —toward catastrophe. Today hungry nations; tomorrow starving nations. . . . By 1975 civil disorder, anarchy, military dictatorships, runaway inflation, transportation breakdowns and chaotic unrest will be the order of the day in many of the hungry nations… never before in human history have all the conditions specified by Jesus been observed in the same generation. And never before have they existed at the same time in every nation of the earth. Today we live, not merely in the last days of one political empire, but in the “last days” of the entire wicked system controlled by Satan.”

1969-03-15 WT pp 168-173 – “What Influences Decisions in Your Life?”

…never before in human history have all the conditions specified by Jesus been observed in the same generation. And never before have they existed at the same time in every nation of the earth. Today we live, not merely in the last days of one political empire, but in the “last days” of the entire wicked system controlled by Satan… (par 5) How important it is then that we choose carefully our associations so that their influence on our decisions is for good… How then can we avoid the ungodly influence of the worldly people among whom we live? (par 7) Today the attitude of the majority of people is, “Let’s live now! The majority think in terms of pleasure and ease, being materially well fixed. They live for this world. They want what they want now, believing it is now or never. They have no hope for the future. Their thinking is so influenced by Satan, the god of this system of things, that without realizing it they are his slaves. (par 10) Christians cannot afford to… slow down, take time out to travel side roads, or follow others who do not know where they are going. Yet, this is exactly what Christians would be doing if they participated in office parties and company conventions or outings where, because of their association, they could be induced to let down their moral guard. At our place of employment have we been influenced by fellow workers to join in competitive sporting groups or leagues that rob us of our time for Bible study and for preaching the good news of God’s kingdom? This is unnecessary worldly association that can influence us to make wrong decisions and can easily lead to acts of immorality. (par 12) The influence and spirit of this world is to get ahead, to make a name for oneself. Many schools now have student counselors who encourage one to pursue higher education after high school, to pursue a career with a future in this system of things. Do not be influenced by them. Do not let them “brainwash” you with the Devil’s propaganda to get ahead, to make something of yourself in this world. This world has very little time left! Any “future” this world offers is no future! Wisely, then, let God’s Word influence you in selecting a course that will result in your protection and blessing. Make pioneer service, the full-time ministry, with the possibility of Bethel or missionary service your goal. This is a life that offers an everlasting future! (par 18) Usually we have time to ponder and consider the situation carefully before making weighty decisions. So when faced with such a weighty decision, take time to isolate in your mind the Scriptural principles that govern the matter involved. Apply them to your circumstances. Ask yourself, “What would Christ Jesus have done under the same conditions?” This question will help you to view the situation free from beclouding emotion… By reasoning this way you are allowing God’s Word and the faithful example of his Son to influence your decisions. (par 19) Jehovah’s organization as directed by his “faithful and discreet slave” class should influence our every decision also. How may we avail ourselves of this good influence? …This always proves to be a real aid in making clear to us the Bible principles involved and their application to our lives.

1969-03-15 WT pp 177-78

(par 17) “Many dedicated Christian men and women have made the decision to remain single for a period of time. They have made this decision so that they may have greater freedom to serve Jehovah and may be able to serve him more fully without distraction. Some have decided to remain single through the final troubled years of this old system until after Armageddon.” (par 18) “Have you made this decision? If so, it is very important that you live up to it. Your joy and happiness in Jehovah’s service as a single person depends greatly on your continuing to be single-minded, not torn in your thinking.” (par 20) “Since your associates will often determine the subject of your conversations, choose as your close associates those who have the same desire and outlook as you—those who have made the same decision.

1969-05-15 WT p 312

The urgency of the times in which we are living requires that we do all we can to bring our lives into harmony with God’s will. From what you have learned you know why this system of things is rapidly deteriorating before our eyes. You know the meaning of the unrest and increased violence in all the earth. All this shows that we have approached the very brink of the earth-cleansing destruction of which Jesus and the Bible writers prophesied! This is the most serious time in human history, and you are living in this time of change. “The world is passing away,” the Bible says, but those who do ‘the will of God will remain forever.’ Your studying the Bible is to equip you to learn that will of God so you can do it. Yes, there is a purpose behind this study; there is a future attached to it… An essential part of that will, as we have noted, is to meet together regularly with fellow worshipers of Jehovah God. It is also God’s will that we tell others about him and his loving purposes. If we fail to do this, can we truthfully say that we are doing God’s will? In view of the short time left in which to do their work, Jehovah’s witnesses do not continue to study the Bible with any who fail to respond to its urgent message within six months. The nearness of this system’s end compels them to use their time in the most effective way possible… Thus it may be that if you have not as yet responded by even becoming a regular attender at some of the congregation meetings, the one who is studying the Bible with you may cancel that study arrangement in order to give his time to someone else. This arrangement is not meant to be harsh, but the urgency of the times in which we live demands it. There are millions of persons who need spiritual help and God’s servants want to reach all they possibly can… If you love God and appreciate his provision for eternal life, do not turn your back on it. Realize that God has shown great consideration for you by making it possible for someone to come to your home to help you learn His will and purposes. Respond to his divine love by deciding now to do his will…”

1969-05-22 Aw pp 302-303 – “What Future For The Young”

Young or old, you need to face up to the fact that this system is not going to change its direction under Satan’s influence… The truth of this can be seen in crime statistics everywhere. (List of statistics) If you are a young person, you also need to face the fact that you will never grow old in this present system of things. Why not? Because all the evidence in fulfillment of Bible prophecy indicates that this corrupt system is due to end in a few years. Of the generation that observed the beginning of the “last days” in 1914, Jesus foretold: “This generation will by no means pass away until all these things occur.” Therefore, as a young person, you will never fulfill any career that this system offers. If you are in high school and thinking about a college education, it means at least four, perhaps even six or eight more years to graduate into a specialized career. But where will this system of things be by that time? It will be well on the way toward its finish, if not actually gone! True, those who do not understand where we are in the stream of time from God’s viewpoint will call this impractical. But which is really practical: preparing yourself for a position in this world that soon will pass away? or working toward surviving this system’s end and enjoying eternal life in God’s righteous new order?”

1969-06-00 KM pp 3-6 – “Full-Time Service – Youth’s Splendid Opportunity”

…we have offered ourselves willingly in this day when he will take military action against this wicked system of things. Will you be finishing school soon? If so, what have you decided to do after you graduate? Or, are you one who has already finished school? What course of activity are you pursuing? Of course, there may be a tempting offer of higher education or of going into some field of work that promises material rewards. However, Jehovah God holds out to you young folks many marvelous privileges of service in his organization. Which will you decide to take up? In view of the short time left, a decision to pursue a career in this system of things is not only unwise but extremely dangerous.Yes, will you make yourself available for greater privileges of service in the organization that Jehovah has purposed to preserve forever? Or will you pursue a career in this unhappy, dying system of things? Many young brothers and sisters were offered scholarships or employment that promised fine pay. However, they turned them down and’ put spiritual interests first. In some cases this was not easy, because of pressure from the world to take up its offers… For example, one young brother in Florida was offered a four-year scholarship in engineering… He went into the full-time pioneer service (instead). During his pioneering he helped a family of five…(and) helped two teenagers to get on the road leading to life. Is it likely that he would have been able to do this if he had spent most of his time studying engineering in college? These persons are truly seven precious letters of recommendation to which he can point with joyful satisfaction. They are the fruitage of his loving labors, which were blessed by God, and don’t you agree that they are worth far more than a degree in engineering? …Naturally, the more time we spend in Jehovah’s happy service, the greater will be the rewards and blessings… Since sharing in serving Jehovah brings us the greatest happiness, doing so full time will bring you delightful contentment and unspeakable pleasure. It will draw you closer to him! …your involvement with Satan’s system of things is cut down to an absolute minimum while your life becomes more and more involved with Jehovah’s organization and spiritual matters. Yes, and with each passing day you are more and more built up spiritually instead of being torn down by the filth of this old order… No doubt about it, young brothers and sisters, full-time service is indeed the most satisfying way of life. It is a life that will not only allow you to give of yourself but it will reward you in many ways that you cannot imagine. Why not seriously consider taking up this precious privilege? You will never be disappointed that you did!”

1969-07-15 WT pp 425-431 – “Reviving The Spirit of Self-Sacrifice”

(par 5) “True Christians know that God’s kingdom has been established in the heavens and has been reigning for some time. In fact, we are a long way into the time of the end, and not too much time remains for this old system of things. When God, through his king, Jesus Christ, takes action to rid this earth of those who have no interest in doing things His way it will be too late for any more to come out into God’s place of safety. World events in fulfillment of Bible prophecy give sure indication that only a few years remain for this wicked arrangement of things.” (Par 10) “It is a matter of making the best possible use of the remaining time. One must be able to evaluate or appraise things so as to judge or decide what is truly worth while and most beneficial, and especially what is worthwhile activity in this day. What was it that was worth while in Noah’s day? …Jehovah has something much more important for us today to do than get involved excessively in normal pursuits of the world.” (Par 13) “Those who are young and still in school will have many fine opportunities to stand up for what they know to be right and to provide an effective witness while doing so. Maybe you will have to abstain from styles, fads, parties, popularity or college. In doing so you will provide a refreshing example to some who might have a leaning toward righteousness.”

1969-07-15 WT p 438 – (par 24)

We will also want to guard against misplaced sacrifices. Have you been thinking of working overtime, or allowing your wife to work so that your son can go to college? This will be a ‘sacrifice,’ but is it really worth it? Too often these sons have come out of college with little or no faith in God nor love and respect for their parents who worked so hard to make the higher education possible. This experience has been a bitter disappointment to some. It is the wrong kind of sacrifice. By contrast, parents who concern themselves primarily with Christian training for their children and provide a Christian example for them to follow will find this a sacrifice that is pleasing to God.” (par 25) “It is good to be living in the time when the kind of sacrifices that Jehovah enjoys most can be offered up to him. We are glad that these are to be offered in the form of praise by Christians who are intelligent and enlightened, not in a formalistic, sectarian way. It has been made clear just what God delights in. What a privilege to know of sacrifices that are acceptable to him and to offer them!

1969-09-01 WT pp 517-524 – “Peace on Earth” International Assembly recap

(SIX printed releases!)…The principal highlight of (these assemblies) was the public lecture, “The Approaching Peace of a Thousand Years.” …That this peace is near is indicated, not only by world conditions, which fulfill Bible prophecy, but also by the fact that six thousand years of mankind’s history is soon to end. It was pointed out that, in ancient Israel, a sabbath day was enjoyed after six days of toil; also that the thousand-year reign of Christ is merely a day from God’s viewpoint. “In order for the Lord Jesus Christ to be ‘Lord even of the sabbath day,’ ” the speaker declared, “ his thousand-year reign would have to be the seventh in a series of thousand-year periods or millenniums.” That time is near at hand! …In conclusion he told his listeners: “Jehovah’s Christian witnesses are joyfully preparing for the approaching peace of a thousand years. All who yearn to enjoy that foretold ‘peace on earth for men whom [God] favors’ are heartily invited to join them in getting ready for the blessed millennium of peace.”

1969-10-01 WT pp 592-598

(par 23) “…It is now the seventh day for marching. Could this be a day for “sleeping in,” or for taking things easy due to the length of the march? Far from it! There had been no sabbath of rest during the six days, nor was this seventh day to be a sabbath. This day “they proceeded to get up early, as soon as the dawn ascended.” Now they must march round the city seven times just on one day! Why, this final effort was to be more than that of all the previous days put together! (Josh. 6:15) And today, with less than seven years remaining to the end of six thousand years of human history, and with all the prophetic evidence that Christendom is about to be shaken from her proud foundations, are we not fired with zeal to get round our territory seven times and more? Time is short, and the message must be sounded! It is no time for drooping hands or wobbling knees. As we give our all in his service, we can be confident that Jehovah, the God who “does not tire out or grow weary,” will be in our very midst to strengthen us, just as the ark of Jehovah’s presence was in the midst of Joshua’s marching army. He will continue to infuse power into us as the final march intensifies.”

1969-10-15 WT pp 612-625 – “Approaching Peace of 1000 Years”

(The timely and heartwarming message contained in this article was presented as a public discourse to audiences with a combined attendance of 840,572 in principal cities o f North America and Europe during July and August of this year.) – (par 5) …the Soviet Union’s next-door neighbor, Communist China, is a big problem for her, yes, and for much of the rest of the world. Added to the awesomeness of her tremendous population is the disquieting fact that Communist China is now a nuclear power with the capacity of launching long-range missiles. By continued success in the missile field and by beginning to stockpile her weapons in the year 1972, and then keeping this up, the Communist Chinese “should be in a position to deploy 15 or 20 Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles by about 1975.”—New York Times, February 3, 1969. (par 34) “ …When, though, does the Prince of Peace start his government of an endless peace? Righteously disposed people today are crying out for such a government. Does not the very world situation mark this as the epoch in which it would be most fitting for Jehovah God to bring in such a government according to his unbreakable promise of Isaiah 9:6, 7? Apparently so. (par 35) “ …Till this year, after more than half a century, the nations have refused to do so. What will this mean shortly for all mankind? This: the outbreak of the “war of the great day of God the Almighty” at the world situation called Har-Magedon or Armageddon. (par 36) “ …After this taking away of all human and demon obstructors of world peace there will come the reign of the Prince of Peace over all the earth. God’s fixed time for this is approaching, and along with it the peace of a thousand years. A thousand years equals a millennium. This reminds us of something said in the aforementioned inaugural speech of the American president on January 20, 1969. He remarked upon the approach of things of interest to Americans and to all Christendom. In the eighth paragraph of his speech the newly sworn-in president said: “Eight years from now America will celebrate its 200th anniversary as a nation. And within the lifetime of most people now living, mankind will celebrate that great new year which comes only once in a thousand years—the beginning of the third millennium.” The president was referring to A.D. 2001.” (par 37) “The next remarks of the president showed that he expected there to be an America in the first year of that third millennium. But for God-fearing students of the Holy Bible… there is a more important millennium that compels their attention… the seventh millennium of man’s existence here on earth, the seventh millennium measured from God’s creation of perfect man and woman in the garden of Eden.” (par 38) “Does this fact have any bearing on the approach of the peace of a thousand years or of a millennium? Very apparently Yes! (par 39) “… More recently earnest researchers of the Holy Bible have made a recheck of its chronology. According to their calculations the six millenniums of mankind’s life on earth would end in the mid-seventies. Thus the seventh millennium from man’s creation by Jehovah God would begin within less than ten years.” (par 40) “…Apart from the global change that present-day world conditions indicate is fast getting near, the arrival of the seventh millennium of man’s existence on earth suggests a gladsome change for war-stricken humankind.” (par 41) “… The Lord Jesus Christ, the prospective Prince of Peace, pointed forward to a greater Sabbath Day. Pointing forward to this, he said on a certain weekly sabbath day when he came under criticism: “Lord of the sabbath is what the Son of man is.” (Matt. 12:1-8) He was referring to his peaceful reign of a thousand years. Jehovah God measures human affairs according to a thousand-year-length rule. (par 42) “… In order for the Lord Jesus Christ to be “Lord even of the sabbath day,” his thousand-year reign would have to be the seventh in a series of thousand-year periods or millenniums. Thus it would be a sabbatic reign. Since early in the existence of mankind Satan the Devil has been on the loose, making the human family to toil in hard bondage, causing the earth to be filled with violence before the global flood of Noah’s day and inducing the same old earth to be filled with even greater violence today. Soon now six millenniums of his wicked exploiting of mankind as his slaves will end, within the lifetime of the generation that has witnessed world events since the close of the Gentile Times in 1914 till now, according to the prophetic words of Jesus. Would not, then, the end of six millenniums of mankind’s laborious enslavement under Satan the Devil be the fitting time for Jehovah God to usher in a Sabbath millennium for all his human creatures? Yes, indeed! And his King Jesus Christ will be Lord of that Sabbath.” (par 44) “… It was no mere idle phrase when his truthful apostle Paul wrote that God’s sabbath law had a “shadow of the good things to come.” (par 48) “… Jehovah’s Christian witnesses of today are joyfully preparing for that approaching peace of a thousand years. All who yearn to enjoy that foretold “peace on earth for men whom [God] favours” are heartily invited to join them in getting ready for that blessed millennium of peace.”

1970-01-22 Aw pp 5-8 – “Will It Mean Food for Us to Eat?”

The advice commonly heard is: “Work hard, save your money and you will have a ‘nest egg’ for the future.” Yet people who follow this advice are often bitterly disappointed… Others, who have kept their money in a bank, have had it suddenly devalued. Thus, they too have lost much or everything overnight. Does this not underscore the soundness of the advice given by Jesus Christ? He said: “Stop storing up for yourselves treasures upon the earth… Jesus thus indicated that there are treasures of greater value than material ones… In our day it should be obvious that a quest merely for food, or for money to buy food, can only lead to disappointment. Why is this? It is because of what lies ahead… In fact, according to South China Morning Post, January 2,1969, with the passing of every minute some sixty-six persons in the world die from the effects of starvation! But this is just a foretaste of what lies ahead… A noted scientist comments in Reader’s Digest, February 1969: “It is shockingly apparent that, in the battle to feed humanity, our side has been routed… already too late to prevent a drastic rise in the death rate through starvation. In a well-documented book, Famine—1975!, William and Paul Paddock predict that the time of famines will be upon us full-scale in 1975…What’s done is done. We must look to the survivors, if any.” How practical, therefore, it is to take time to study God’s Word the Bible and learn what is necessary to please your heavenly Creator! This can lead to your receiving, not only God’s marvelous guarantee of physical necessities now, but everlasting life with both spiritual and physical plenty in God’s new system of things… Working with a view to life in God’s righteous new system is most practical. However, does someone object, saying: “But that is in the future”? Well, think about it in this way. Parents work hard to give their children a good education. This often involves supporting them and paying for their education for ten to fifteen years or more. But they believe that this long-term view of things is practical, because in time their children will be able to secure a job and supplement the family income. To heed Jesus’ advice to prepare for the future by laying up treasures in heaven is even more practical. But how do you lay up treasures in heaven? This is done by pursuing a course of life that will result in the goodwill of God in heaven… All together, these things mean that we have now reached the “time of the end,” the time of Christ’s second presence, when God soon will destroy this wicked system of things… Think of it! Surviving when God brings to an end this wicked world… At that time food will no longer be scarce, as it is in so many places today. Yes, God’s new system will usher in a time of plenty!  Clearly, this is not the time to become loaded down with the cares of this life and to concentrate all efforts on material interests. Time is fast running out for this wicked system of things! It is, therefore, urgent that we do not make material food our chief concern in life… You simply cannot live much longer without this knowledge of God! The amount of time you spend in this will prove to be very small in comparison to the rewards and blessings that will follow… If you do that, you will be in line to experience his protective care during this old system’s destruction, now but a few short years away. Then you will enjoy life to the full in a cleansed earth where ‘Jehovah of armies will certainly make for all the peoples a banquet of well-oiled dishes.’

1970-02-15 WT pp 117-120 – “The Days of Creation from God’s Viewpoint”

…The Bible record indicates that the universe, the starry heavens, as well as this planet earth, were created before the first of earth’s creative days began… Just how long, then, were these “days” of creation? The Bible gives us a clue as to the length of the seventh day. Since these “days” were all part of one ‘week,’ it would be reasonable to conclude that all these “days” were of the same length… The only logical conclusion that we can reach is that the seventh day has continued right on. Does the Bible support this conclusion? Yes, it most certainly does, for it speaks of Jehovah God as still resting thousands of years after creation… And as the words of the apostle Paul are applicable to Christians today, it follows that Jehovah has been enjoying his sabbath or rest from physical creation almost six thousand years now… This accounts for 6,000 years. Is that the length of the seventh day? No, because we read that “God proceeded to bless the seventh day and make it sacred.” Its outcome must be “very good,” and that is not true of present world conditions… Actually these six thousand years have been, as it were, man’s workweek, in which he labored by the sweat of his face. But he will get rest during the coming thousand-year reign of Christ, which Bible chronology and fulfillment of Bible prophecy show is to begin very soon. Thus we find the seventh “day” of the creative week to be seven thousand years long. On the basis of the length of the seventh “day” it is therefore reasonable to conclude that each of the other six “days” also was a period of 7,000 years. This length of time would be ample for all that the Bible tells us took place on each of the six days of creation… There is, as we have seen, good reason to believe that the days of creation were each 7,000 years long. Now the fact that we are living at the end of six thousand years of the seventh “day” is of the greatest interest and importance to us… [Jesus] pointed out that he was “Lord of the sabbath.” By this he was pointing forward to the sabbath of a thousand years during which he will bring back mankind to perfection of body and mind. Thus, our appreciating the days of creation from God’s viewpoint is not only seen to be Scriptural, reasonable and harmonious with such facts as men of science have been able to produce, but also inspires in us the hope of soon enjoying the Lord’s sabbath of God’s rest day, a day when health, life and happiness will be restored to humankind. Truly God’s ways and thoughts are infinitely superior to man’s thoughts and ways…

(par 34) “What a fine way for young people to serve their Creator in the few remaining years of this present violent system of things!” (par 35) “If you are a young person, why waste your life in pursuing sensual pleasures or trying to gain riches and a position in the present system of things that will soon pass away? Why be like the young people of Noah’s day who pursued the wrong things and had their lives cut short in the Deluge?

(par 30) In the few remaining years of the old system of things they will want to do as the Scriptures admonish: “Keep proving what you yourselves are.” (2 Cor. 13:5) By their conduct, by their companions, by their manner of speech, by their wanting and always striving to do what is right in God’s eyes and by their activity in the ministry, they can prove what they are, that they are Christ’s disciples. Are you one of these fine, young people? Are you proving that you are different from worldly young people and have “put on the new personality which was created according to God’s will in true righteousness and loyalty” ? If you are, you have a magnificent future.

1970-05-01 WT pp 265-271 – “Keep Close In Mind “The Conclusion of the System of Things”

(par 9) “But you may ask, How do we know these things will really come, that there actually will be a conclusion to this system of things? There are quite a number of proofs. Several events are recorded in history when earlier systems of things came to their end, those events being prophetic of our time. We also have Jesus’ testimony and that of other inspired writers regarding the conclusion of this system. Bible chronology indicates the rapid approach of the end for this old system under the god of this world, Satan. Additional evidences include Bible prophecy now in course of fulfillment and the testimony of world leaders who show growing concern for the present system as they see no way out of its problems.” (par 12) “In order to survive the end of this system of things in our day we must keep Jesus’ words of warning in mind and follow the faithful example of Noah. He served as a preacher of righteousness to his generation, and that is what Jehovah’s people today must do. We must enter into the Christian system of things, which was pictured by the ark… This Christian system includes the pure worship of Jehovah, following the high standards of Christian conduct set forth by Jesus, such as… cooperating in the building up of this Christian system just as Noah’s sons helped in building the ark. No one can expect to be preserved through the end of this system unless he shows himself to be amenable to the Christian system and advancing its interests.” (par 15) “It is in his spiritual system of things under the direction of Christ that Jehovah directs and protects his dedicated servants in the short remaining time before the old system is finally destroyed.” (par 16) “…So consider now how Jesus’ answer to the apostles’ question about the sign of his presence helps us to identify with surety the generation marking the end of this system… What did Jesus and his apostles tell us to look for? They mentioned one generation in particular during which there would be an increase of lawlessness with distress of nations, world war, earthquakes and pestilence.” (par 20) “The black horse of Revelation 6:5 with a man holding a pair of scales as its rider can be seen more and more throughout the world as a result of the food shortages Jesus foretold. No longer is it just a matter of famine following war, but as Science News said, “Some experts say the Great World Famine has already begun.” Mankind is currently doubling in population every thirty-five years. Already it has been estimated that at least three million people die each year from lack of protein foods. Dr. Ewell, an expert on food production, estimated that within ten to fifteen years there will be mass starvation…” (par 21) “…No wonder the book Famine—1975! reports there will be “a famine that will happen no matter what anyone does.” Certainly a new system of things is needed to overcome the specter of mass starvation as the “black horse” continues its famine-striking course.” (par 25) “The facts show that conditions have never before been so critical. So do not let yourself be found among those who ridicule the significance of the events of our time which are in such exact fulfillment of Bible prophecy. The very fact that so many are losing faith in God and in what the Scriptures say about the end of this system and the establishment of Jehovah’s righteous new system only confirms the prophecy of Peter… Despite such ridicule the facts indicate that this is the generation that will see the end of this system of things and the establishment of an entirely new earthly system under Jehovah’s kingdom of righteousness. (par 26) “…It is the time for us to share in the ingathering work before it is completed, so that we will be among the happy ones for whom “the conclusion of the system of things” brings, not weeping, but joy as survivors into Jehovah’s new earth of righteousness.”

1970-05-01 WT pp 271-277 – “An Ingathering Affecting All Mankind”

(par 5) How close we may exactly be to the end of the present divisive system of things cannot be predicted, as Jesus reported that even he did not know the day or the hour at the time of his earthly ministry. (Matt. 24:36) However, Bible chronology which indicates that Adam was created in the fall of the year 4026 B.C.E. would bring us down to the year 1975 C.E. as the date marking 6,000 years of human history with yet 1,000 years to come for Christ’s Kingdom rule. So whatever the date for the end of this system, it is clear that the time left is reduced, with only approximately six years left until the end of 6,000 years of human history. This corroborates the understanding of Jesus’ words that the generation alive in 1914 with the outbreak of World War I would not pass away until the end comes. Only a short time, then, remains for persons who love righteousness to show God that they want to be in his “ark” of protection and live to see the blessings of the new system of things.” (par 14) NEED FOR ACTION NOW (par 16) “The time is very short now for further preaching and teaching of God’s kingdom among the political nations. So it is important for us now to show that we are no part of the present system of things but that we are living for the new system and the blessings it will bring. If we want to live through this “time of the end” on the nations to enjoy Jehovah’s righteous new system under Christ the King, then there is no time to be lost. Remember that not only the Bible but also world leaders have attested to the urgency of the times in which we live. The few remaining years of this generation do not give much time during which we can show Jehovah we truly want to be pleasing to him so that we will be privileged to enjoy life at his hand in the new system of things. We need to schedule our affairs to show him what really is first in our lives. (par 17) “…Jehovah knows those who by their course of action show they belong to him, those that he will protect through the climactic end of this “time of the end” when the gathering out of all weedlike Christians will be irrevocably finished. No simple list of requirements to ensure salvation is recorded in the Scriptures… A “public declaration” of the truth is one requisite for those who have the hope of salvation.” (par 18) “…There is no obligation on God’s part; everything depends on his mercy. So if we make a real effort to seek Jehovah and to follow his Word and serve him so as to deserve his mercy, then probably, by Jehovah’s undeserved kindness, we will be hid with those who live through the end of this system to enjoy all the blessings that men of faith will enjoy on the cleansed earth in the post-Armageddon system.

1970-09-01 WT pp 539 – “Preparing for the Approaching Millennial Peace”

What assurances do the Scriptures give that there will be a millennial peace? The Scriptures give us abundant basis for hope regarding this millennial peace. What evidences are there that the approaching peace of a thousand years is close at hand? Fulfillment of Bible prophecies indicates that the end of this system of things is near at hand, to be followed by the millennial peace. Further, Bible chronology indicates that we are at the close of six thousand years of human history. For Jesus to be “Lord of the sabbath,” his thousand-year reign would have to be the seventh in a series of thousand-year periods. Would not, then, the end of six millenniums of mankind’s laborious enslavement under Satan the Devil be the fitting time for Jehovah God to usher in a sabbath millennium for all mankind? How can we prepare for the approaching peace of a thousand years? To prepare for that peace one must make peace with Jehovah God and then keep at peace with him. This means to take in knowledge of Jehovah God and of his Word, exercise faith in him and in his Son as one’s Savior and Redeemer. It means repenting from one’s former wrong course of action and turning around and following a course of righteousness. It further means dedicating oneself to do Jehovah’s will and to follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ. It includes symbolizing that dedication by water baptism. Once having begun to follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ one must continue to do so…there is obligation to preach the good news of God’s kingdom and to make disciples. Further, one must keep separate from the world and keep seeking first God’s kingdom and his righteousness. In all such ways Christians can show that they are preparing for the approaching millennial peace.

The first Awake! Magazine I read (April 8, 1967, in Japanese) featured the subject “Why Does God Permit Wickedness?” Till this time I had not even thought of God’s existence, but the article explained that God had created man with free moral agency. Also I learned of Adam’s creation in 4026 BCE. This really impressed me. Why? Because in the mid-1970’s man will have been on the earth for a period of 6,000 years—and a climax in man’s history is at the door! But, most of all, I was impressed by the regular visits of the Witnesses at my home, all without any selfish motive.

(par 6) “While many have felt that they could best serve God by developing their own talents and inclinations, whether in the arts or in education or medicine, still we find no indication in the Scriptures that these things will lead to everlasting life. While hard work is called “the gift of God” and can bring joy to the person accomplishing it, still as Solomon said, he hated the thought of leaving it all behind at death for someone who would follow him. So how much better it is to devote our principal efforts to accomplish a work with a future, a work that leads to everlasting life.

1971-06-08 AW pp 3-8 – “Second Thoughts about a College Education”

Parents who are Jehovah’s witnesses have another very sound reason for channeling their children’s lives into useful trades. They know from fulfilled Bible prophecy that today’s industrial society is near its end. Soon it will be given its death stroke by Almighty God himself. (Prov. 2:20, 21; 1 John 2:17) After that, in God’s new order a reconstruction work will be done to transform this entire earth into a paradise. (Luke 23:43) Trades of many types will be very useful then, as will skills in agriculture and homemaking. So by guiding their children away from the so-called ‘higher’ education of today, these parents spare their children exposure to an increasingly demoralizing atmosphere, and at the same time prepare them for life in a new system as well.

(par 2) “Do you wish to be part of the righteous world that is rewarded with everlasting life in the Kingdom’s earthly realm? Then you must learn about Jehovah and his Son, and exercise faith in Christ’s precious sacrificial blood…” (par 10) “…With populations exploding all over the earth, many nations now stand at the brink of starvation, and disaster is predicted by experts for the mid-1970’s. Rather than fit in with political promises of a bright, materialistic tomorrow, this devastation on earth fits Jehovah’s prophecies on mankind’s waywardness in the “last days.” (par 13) “…the publishing organization of Jehovah’s witnesses is hard pressed to keep up with the demand for publications. In 1967 the Brooklyn factory’s production of Bibles and hardbound books reached a total of 8,252,860 volumes, in 1968 it was 12,130,996 volumes and in 1969 an astounding 24,038,531 volumes. But in 1970 Bibles and books printed reached 26,232,766 copies.” (par 15) “…Though a little time remains to live in this world, we do not have to associate with it unnecessarily. We need not let our guard down by hobnobbing with worldlings at office parties, in outings or in sports groups. (1 Cor. 15:33) Worldly people are not governed by God’s principles, and a “nice” exterior can conceal wicked intents. Walk in integrity with Jehovah by shunning worldly associations, and you will be happy in finding that he does not hold back any good thing from you. Truly, those who studiously avoid associations in “tents of wickedness” are rewarded many times over.” (par 16) “Impressionable youths are often the target of greedy materialists. Parents, fortify your children. See that they avoid the bad influences at school—dances, parties, dating…” (par 17) “All worldly careers are soon to come to an end. So, why should today’s youth get interested in ‘higher education’ for a future that will never eventuate? The colleges are falling into chaos, anyway. The essentials of education for a useful life can be obtained by studying well at high school, and beyond that there is also the ‘highest education’ that Jehovah provides through his organization, preparing for a satisfying career of full-time service that goes on forever. (Ps. 71:5, 17; 61:8) Let young people, and older people, too, avoid reading matter, TV and movies that highlight worldliness. Rather than see how close one can keep to the world’s course and yet stay in the truth, how much wiser to see how far away one can get from the interests and ways of the world!

1971-10-08 Aw pp 26-29 – “Time of Rest and Refreshment at Hand!”

OUR generation will see the end of the present pressure-ridden order. In fact, there is even good reason to hope that a new order of God’s making may begin within the present decade. Why is this? …The generation living in 1914 when ‘these things started to occur’ has now grown old. In the more than half a century that has passed, that generation’s numbers have considerably diminished. Yet the “ all things” foretold by Jesus for our day must occur fully before ‘this generation passes completely away.’ That means that the due time for their full occurrence must be near at hand, very close… All the other features of Jesus’ prophecy have now come true with startling accuracy. We need not doubt that he spoke inspired truth when he said that the generation seeing the start of this “time of the end” will also see its windup. That will mean the end of the present unsatisfying, selfish, oppressive old order and the introduction of God’s righteous, refreshing new order. But why is there reason to hope that this changeover may take place even within the present decade? The Bible shows that we are nearing the close of 6,000 years of human history. Bible chronology reveals that human life began with Adam’s creation some 4,058 years before the death of Jesus (in the spring of the year 33 C.E.). By adding to this the years from Jesus’ death till now, we find that the completion of 6,000 years of man’s existence will come near the middle of this decade of the 1970’s. This is significant. Why? The answer is found in the Law covenant God gave to ancient Israel through his mediator Moses. The Bible assures us that that Law had “a shadow of the good things to come.” Colossians 2:16, 17 shows that the sabbath arrangement is included among those ‘shadows of things to come.’ According to that sabbath arrangement every seventh day was a day of rest from all labor. Also, every seventh year was a year of rest for the land, with no plowing nor sowing being done. Thereby not only did the land have opportunity to renew its productive strength, but so did the people. What “good things” did this foreshadow? That sabbath arrangement foreshadowed grand blessings and relief for all mankind by means of Christ’s kingdom. The book of Revelation shows that, with the end of the present unrighteous order, Christ’s kingdom will bring in a thousand-year rule of peace and divine blessings. This will result in a sabbathlike rest for the earth and all its inhabitants… The coming thousand-year reign of his Son would then be a seventh “day” following those six. It would fit perfectly the prophetic pattern of a sabbath period of rest following six periods of toil and labor. So, as we draw close to the completion of six thousand years of human existence during this decade, there is the thrilling hope that a grand Sabbath of rest and relief is indeed at hand. Then frustrating, wearisome pressures will end. In their place will be refreshing freedom and enjoyment of good. What must you do if you want to gain life in that refreshing new order under God’s government by his Son? [Chart showing the 1000-year reign of Jesus possibly beginning in 1975]

1972-04-01 WT pp 197-200 – “They Shall Know That A Prophet Was Among Them”

…a third way of coming to know Jehovah God is through his representatives. In ancient times he sent prophets as his special messengers. While these men foretold things to come, they also served the people by telling them of God’s will for them at that time, often also warning them of dangers and calamities. People today can view the creative works. They have at hand the Bible, but it is little read or understood. So, does Jehovah have a prophet to help them, to warn them of dangers and to declare things to come? Identifying the “Prophet” – These questions can be answered in the affirmative. Who is this prophet? …He had a “prophet” to warn them. This “prophet” was not one man, but was a body of men and women. It was the small group of footstep followers of Jesus Christ, known at that time as International Bible Students. Today they are known as Jehovah’s Christian witnesses. They are still proclaiming a warning, and have been joined and assisted in their commissioned work by hundreds of thousands of persons who have listened to their message with belief. Of course, it is easy to say that this group acts as a “prophet” of God. It is another thing to prove it. The only way that this can be done is to review the record. What does it show?

1972-04-08 Aw pp 16

Most persons who read the Bible, even casually, know that the human race is about six thousand years old… Conscientious students of the Bible know that its Author is an exact, painstaking timekeeper… They know how the ancient chronology of mankind, kept only in the Bible, links up with reliable historical chronology, so that accurate dates can be put on the happenings recorded from Adam’s creation in 4026 B.C.E. onward. More than this, they know that the Bible, as a prophetic book, often linked time features with future events that came to pass exactly in the year foretold. Many now living have personally witnessed the fulfillment of the long-range prophecy of the “times of the nations,” which extended into this twentieth century. They saw the outbreak of World War I in the predicted year 1914, ushering in the period of distress from which this world is destined never to recover. They now look to this decade for the completion of the six thousandth year of man’s existence. They are confidently hopeful that the seventh 1000-year day will bring the millennial reign of the Prince of Peace. Mature Christians are familiar, through their study and experience, with the accurate chronology of the Bible. To them the idea that God could have been mistaken in the time of man’s creation, or that he would have been so careless in providing and preserving the record that we today would not have this vital information, is incredible.

How much better to do work that is not in vain in connection with the Lord. (par 17) We are encouraged, then, to follow this good example of love for Jehovah and true worship rather than be too tied down to homes and jobs and material possessions, enjoying too much what this old system offers for a few more years. This matter is really urgent! Time is running out for those who allow themselves to be trapped by pursuit of material pleasures. Can you picture in your mind anyone but Almighty God performing the mighty task of building a completely new system on the ashes of the old, and that within our generation?” (par 2) “It is not our purpose to discuss chronology here, yet feel free to ask any of Jehovah’s witnesses to show you from the Scriptures the evidence that we are just a few short years away from the completion of six thousand years of man’s existence on earth, and ask them what they think this means in terms of real freedom and liberation from God’s viewpoint. They will be happy to share this information with you. Footnote to par 2 directs readers to the book, Life Everlasting—in Freedom of the Sons of God. (par 24) “Without a question of doubt, we live in extraordinary times. Dedicated Christians and those studying the Bible with them realize that the “great tribulation” is coming. That time is very near… But, it seems that some associated with the Christian congregation are not truly wholehearted in their service or as obedient to Jehovah as they could be. Many things distract such ones, and they appear to have “one foot in the old system,” so to speak. What about such ones in just a few short years from now? Will they be there? Then there will be no old system of things at all, but God’s kingdom will be in full control over the earth and its affairs.” (par 25) “Truly, Jehovah’s Christian congregation is a marvel. It is not perfect in the absolute or final sense, but it certainly is perfectly devoted to Jehovah and displays his qualities of loving-kindness, mercy and justice.”

In fact, crime, pollution, war, family breakdown and other problems have reached such a crisis stage that scientists believe man’s very existence is threatened! Science magazine of November 28, 1969, observed: “In the continued absence of better ways of heading off these multiple crises, our half-life may no longer be 70 or 20 years, but more like 5 to 70 years, or less. We may have even less than a 50-50 chance of living until 1980. This statement may seem uncertain and excessively dramatic. But is there any scientist who would make a much more optimistic estimate after considering all the different sources of danger and how they are increasing? The shortness of the time is due to the exponential and multiplying character of our problems.” Yes, after nearly 6,000 years of experience in self-rule and after reaching the ultimate in scientific “progress” mankind is on the brink of catastrophe!
